Permits and contractor registration in the city
Permits in Universal City come from the city's Development Services Department, which reviews and approves work before it issues one. The city's line is that anything beyond cosmetic work needs a permit and an inspection. When a job needs a permit, it's issued before work starts and posted on the job site, so the city's review comes ahead of our start date.
Before we start, I check with the city's building office about your job, and if they say a permit is needed, we apply for it as the contractor and you get a copy. You can check us, too. Universal City requires every contractor working in the city to register with the city, and a registration from another city doesn't count here.
- A city registration is good for one year from the date it's issued.
- Contractors register with a certificate of insurance naming Universal City as holder.
- General contractors also need $300,000 in liability coverage and a $5,000 bond.
